Diet With Your Dog

Dieting with my DogThe Association for Pet Obesity Prevention estimates that nearly half of U.S. dogs are overweight or obese. Recent studies indicate a link between overweight people and overweight pets. Peggy Frezon, a writer for Guideposts magazine and former couch potato, learned this truth personally. Both her doctor and her spaniel’s vet suggested that pet and pet parent were on paths to serious health concerns if they didn’t lose weight. At first denying her own weight issues, she set out only to help her pudgy pup slim down. Soon, however, her dog Kelly provided the motivation and encouragement Peggy needed to get herself fit and healthy too. “I fed Kelly baby carrots instead of cookies, but when I reached for a treat she looked at me as if to say, ‘If I have to do this, you do too!”

In her new book, The Dieting with my Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance Peggy shares tips to help readers and their dogs slim down and get fit, by doing it together. “I’ve been there. I know how hard it is to lose weight and keep it off. But I found that my perfect diet buddy was right there by my side.” She adds, “Dogs are always ready to get up and go. They’ll never say ‘I’m too tired,’ or ‘it’s too cold,’ to go out for a walk.” The book includes charts on what you and your dog should weigh, healthy snacks you’ll both love, and how to get started in everything from hiking to strength training with your dog. The book also includes Woof Workouts you can do with your dog—with step by step instructions by a trainer from K9 Fit Club, a nationwide gym where people and dogs exercise together. “Anything is more fun when you’re doing it with your best friend,” Peggy says.

The Dieting with my Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance is a companion book to Peggy Frezon’s memoir, Dieting with my Dog which shares her personal weight loss journey with her pup. Peggy lost 41 lbs. and Kelly lost 6 lbs. (15% of her body weight), proving that a pet is good for your health!
